Memorable Berlin tour

This was a great tour. I enjoyed visiting Nordbahnhof, the ghost train station, and the death strip by Bernauer Strasse. Our guide was great and shared a mix of facts and stories that I’ll remember forever. Hearing about Tunnel 57 and the people who risked their lives was fascinating. The Berlin Wall Memorial was very moving, and seeing the Wall sections made history feel real. This experience was amazing for understanding Berlin’s history. If you're in Berlin, check it out!

Thomas
Afternoon full of history

I enjoyed this tour from start to finish. The guide shared stories of families torn apart by the Wall. He also talked about a few escapes through the tunnels. Walking the original Wall route and pausing at Bernauer Strasse felt like a trip back in time. Visiting the Berlin Wall Memorial really made me think about the courage it took to escape. I also saw a preserved area of the border from the tower, which was amazing. Highly recommend this tour for history lovers!

Berlin Wall Tour

WALK THE ORIGINAL WALL ROUTE

Start your Berlin Wall tour at the former Nordbahnhof, once a ghost train station. Trains from West Berlin passed through without stopping, leaving empty platforms. From there, follow the Wall’s original line from Gesundbrunnen to Prenzlauer Berg. Your guide will explain how West Berlin became an isolated island in 1961. The Wall stretched about 155 km (96 miles) around the city. Streets, buildings, and neighborhoods were divided. Families were separated. Neighbors suddenly lived in different countries. Along the route, see old checkpoints, guard towers, and the areas that were part of the death strip.

VISIT HISTORIC SITES AND MEMORIALS

Next, visit key Soviet-era sites where history was made. Stop at Bernauer Strasse, a place famous for dramatic jumps over the Wall. Hear the story of border guard Conrad Schumann’s escape in 1961. This moment was captured in one of the most famous photos in history. See Tunnel 57, a passage used by 57 people to flee East Berlin. Climb the observation tower to see a preserved area of the border. Walk along the Berlin Wall Memorial and see real sections of the Wall. Your guide shares stories of heroism, daily life under the GDR, betrayals, and escapes. At least 140 people died trying to cross the border. This part of the tour gives a clear sense of the dangers people faced.

STORIES, CULTURE, AND MODERN BERLIN

Hear how the Wall shaped modern Berlin, from art and music to culture. Learn about leaders like John F. Kennedy, Khrushchev, and Gorbachev. Discover how they impacted the city and how political events affected everyday lives. See how music and film responded to life with the Wall. This includes Pink Floyd’s “The Wall” and Udo Lindenberg’s special train to Pankow. The two-hour Berlin Wall tour mixes history, personal stories, and insider anecdotes. Finish in Prenzlauer Berg, a lively former GDR neighborhood with cafés and bars where you can relax.

The escape through Tunnel 57

In October 1964, a group of West Berlin students dug a 145-meter tunnel under the Berlin Wall to help East Germans escape. East German guards patrolled the border constantly, but the students risked arrest and imprisonment for a chance of freedom. That night, 57 people successfully fled, making it one of the boldest escape efforts. Sadly, not all attempts ended safely. Many others were arrested or killed while trying to flee. Today, Tunnel 57 is a strong symbol of the bravery and hope of those who risked everything for freedom.
