As a Jewish-American, I found the Berlin Jewish Museum to be very respectful. It’s not only about the Holocaust. Of course that’s a huge chapter in Jewish history, but I feel like it’s often the only thing people focus on. And in reality, there are so many more impactful stories after that tragedy. I had no idea that so many Jews in Germany were Soviet Union immigrants, for example. Or that the original Jewish communities were Ashkenazi. Very enlightening exhibition - I loved it. While exiting, I ended up clicking on the ‘sign up for our newsletter’ button.
I actually visited the Jüdisches Museum Berlin as an architecture student. I wanted to see Daniel Libeskind’s work in person. Ended up loving everything about it. The ‘void’ concept for me is a masterpiece, loved the axes, loved how you can’t see the floors from the outside. But the museum itself is actually incredible. You learn a lot about Jewish culture. I’m embarrassed to say that before I visited, I didn’t even know how the Shabbat worked exactly. I also had no idea about kosher or the Jewish Emancipation or anything. Great experience all-around for me.

WALK THROUGH TIME AND LEARN JEWISH HISTORY
Explore the exhibition divided into five historical chapters. Start with the very beginning of Judaism in Germany - or, as Jews call it, Ashkenaz. Learn about their first community in Cologne, as early as 321 CE! Then find out how Moses Mendelssohn campaigned for Jewish emancipation. He first translated the Torah into German! Next came the Enlightenment or Haskalah: a movement to assimilate Jewry to modernity. The following period - the Holocaust - marks its failure as the most somber stage in Jewish history. Finally, learn how Jewish people live in Germany today, and the traditions they keep alive.
IMMERSE YOURSELF IN JEWISH TRADITIONS
Discover the culture of Judaism, and learn about their sacred items and traditions. For example, you may see a Torah - the Jewish holy scripture and the first five books of the Hebrew Bible. There’ll also be a section dedicated to the Shabbat, the Jewish day of rest. It begins before sunset on Friday and ends after nightfall on Saturday. Other Jewish holidays like Hanukkah, Passover, and Yom Kippur will also be explained. But you’ll learn more than just religious highlights. Get ready to also discover their kosher diet. ENJOY THE ‘BETWEEN THE LINES’ ARCHITECTURE
The Jewish Museum Berlin has two buildings. The first is a traditional Baroque building called the Kollegienhaus. The second, however, is architect Daniel Libeskind’s masterpiece. It’s a stark, deconstructivist-style structure with a titanium-zinc façade. However, its zig-zag voids are especially striking — stark, empty concrete spaces that cut through the building. These empty spaces are called ‘voids’. They represent the physical emptiness that occurred after the Holocaust. They slash across the building without any pattern. In fact, their irregular layout makes it impossible to see different floors from outside. Some of them can even be accessed!
