Engaging storytelling and a rich history

Thoroughly enjoyed visiting the Reichstag, and mostly thanks to our guide Stefan. The building is impressive already from the outside. However, Stefan made it a truly memorable experience with his storytelling. I liked that he spoke about the Reichstag’s history without ignoring the bloody history. He also covered topics like the Jewish victims of the Holocaust. Very respectful and well-spoken throughout as well. The dome and roof terrace were also fun. My wife got some amazing pictures. I swear I even saw the Berlin Wall!

Very humbling feeling - a must for all tourists

I can’t explain it, I felt awed and a little overwhelmed on my visit to the Reichstag. Not in a bad way, just kind of overtaken by everything. It’s a very impressive building - especially the room where the Bundestag meets - and the guide’s stories added to it. Events like the fires, the reunification, the Russian graffiti, etc. You really get lost in the history. Visiting the Dome was definitely the highlight. It’s a beautiful structure, and I love the view both into the Parliament room and the 360° panorama outside.

Reichstag Tour

WALK AROUND THE SEAT OF THE BUNDESTAG

Stand outside the Reichstag - the heart of Germany’s politics. Look at the monumental Neo-Renaissance architecture and its huge white columns. Your guide will then explain its history. First constructed in 1894, it suffered an arson attack by a Dutch activist Marinus van der Lubbe in 1933. This event marked a key moment in the rise of the Nazi regime that ultimately led to the Holocaust. The building remained in ruins for decades. After reunification, the building was restored by architect Norman Foster and reopened in 1999. As you explore, your guide will point out the modern additions from the reconstruction.

VIEW THE PLENARSAAL - THE PLENARY CHAMBERS

Your guide will lead you into the Plenary Chambers. This is where the German Bundestag, or the lower house of the German Parliament, meets. You’ll enter an auditorium with 630 seats, all in a distinctive ‘Reichstag blue’. The architect Sir Norman Foster chose it himself! At the time, the color was chosen to remain politically neutral and create a calm atmosphere. Your guide will then explain how the Bundestag functions. Did you know that politicians debate in public, and that citizens can come and watch? Among other duties, politicians discuss legislative processes and decide on the federal budget.

WALK UP THE DOME OF THE REICHSTAG

The last stop is climbing the Reichstag’s Glass Dome! This huge sphere was also constructed by Norman Foster. The Dome offers 360° panoramic views over Berlin’s skyline, and is a great photo spot. As your guide will explain, the Dome’s futuristic and transparent design represents Germany’s progress away from Nazism. In fact, visitors can see directly into the Plenary Chambers from the Dome. This emphasizes the wish for a fair, transparent government. The Dome is also highly energy-efficient. Since daylight shines through, there is little artificial lighting and reduced carbon emissions.

Reichstag Interesting Facts

  • The Reichstag is dedicated to Dem Deutschen Volke, or the German People. This script is inscribed right above its entrance.
  • In June 1995, the Reichstag was wrapped in more than 90,000 square meters of silver fabric. This was an art installation by environmental sculptors Christo and Jeanne-Claude.
  • The architect behind the Reichstag’s restoration is Norman Foster. He also designed London’s Gherkin and Apple’s new headquarters, called Apple Park.
  • The Dome is very technologically advanced. A large sun shield tracks the sun electronically, and allows or blocks direct sunlight. This reduces the need for air conditioning in the summer, and also keeps the space warm in winter.

GOOD TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO

  • On certain dates, you can also hear a speech of the Bundestag in the Plenary Chambers for free (no guarantee).
  • You can also visit the Dome of the Reichstag later for free.
  • In case the Dome is closed, the roof terrace will still remain accessible.
  • The time booked cannot always be guaranteed. Please ensure your itinerary is flexible, since the tour might take place earlier or later than scheduled.
  • All visitors must carry a photo ID with them. This can be either a passport or an identity card.
  • The Reichstag Tour can sell out fast, so make sure you reserve your tour quickly!

Meeting Point

Meet your tour guide at the intersection of Konrad-Adenauer-Straße and Paul-Löbe-Allee. They’ll be next to the subway exit Bundestag via the U5. It’s exit D, right in front of the elevator.
